Dutch Cup roundup: Groningen and Heracles suffer shock first-round exits

With Thursday’s slate of cup games behind us, the first round of the 2026/27 KNVB Beker is a wrap. Flashscore takes you through Thursday’s results.

Eredivisie side FC Groningen crashed out of the first round of the KNVB Beker for the second time in three years after falling to second-tier FC Emmen.

Swedish striker Jack Cooper-Love took account of both Emmen goals, with the second the highlight – a mazing run past Groningen’s last man with a sweet finish to cap it off. Groningen never stopped trying and got close to scoring via Jacob Ondrejka, whose curling effort was stylishly saved by Kelle Roos, and a deflected cross that hit the post.

Roos was the star of the night, recording 7 saves to keep Groningen goalless and secure his side a second-round ticket.

Amateurs De Treffers shockingly knocked out second-tier leaders Heracles Almelo to reach the second round for the fifth time in six years.

Heracles started the game with a B-team, which annoyed manager Theo Janssen: “When I saw that line-up, I knew we might actually have a chance of winning this match. If they make eight substitutions, they’re not taking us seriously. That spurred my players on,” he told ESPN after the match.

Shortly after Heracles’ Mario Borac was sent off with a second yellow card, Sebastiaan van Bakel scored the only goal of the match by prodding home from a Kane Keizer cross. Even with Keuken Kampioen Divisie vice-top scorer Jean-Paul N’Djoli on the pitch for the last 15 minutes, Heracles couldn’t force a breakthrough.

FC Utrecht survived by the skin of their teeth, knocking out third-tier Kozakken Boys on an evening overshadowed by fighting on the sidelines.

Nikolas Panagiotou scored the only goal of the evening, heading home from a free-kick in an otherwise uneventful match. It really kicked off after full-time at Sportpark De Zwaaier, with fans from both sides getting caught up in a big brawl that required security and police to break it up.

FC Utrecht announced on Friday that no away fans will join the team for Sunday’s Eredivisie clash with Telstar. “FC Utrecht strongly condemns the behaviour of those involved. It is unacceptable that individuals from the away supporters’ section entered the pitch and sought confrontation with Kozakken Boys supporters,” the club said in a statement.

Fourth-tier amateurs Purmersteijn wrote history by reaching the second round of the cup in their first-ever participation after beating VV Gemert 2-0. Gemert controlled the match for the first 90 minutes but couldn’t beat Purmersteijn stopper Dirk Bakker, who recorded 8 total saves. Instead, Lennard Tol put the hosts in front when goalkeeper Jeroen Keeris was caught off his line to stop a deep ball, only for Tol to curl it past the stopper. Purmersteijn capped off the historic win with a controversial penalty, awarded for a foul outside the box, but scored nonetheless by Mylan Polman.

Amsterdam side AFC beat fellow amateurs ACV Assen 2-1 after a spectacular extra-time period. After AFC and ACV kept each other in check for 90 minutes, Ties Hovenkamp scored the opener in the 100th minute on a now-fog-filled Sportpark ICT Specialist. Tom van der Werff equalised nine minutes later to virtually send the game to penalties, but ACV were left stunned after Delano Gouda volleyed AFC to the win in the 115th minute.

In Zeeland, HSV Hoek survived a first-half flurry from Sparta Nijkerk to knock them out in a 4-2 win. The hosts were on top from the first minute and took the lead after just four minutes via Myron Bostdrop, but fell behind when Thijs Buitink and Wimilio Vink earned Sparta the lead inside 21 minutes. It didn’t deter Hoek, who continued their dominance with Bostdorp and Noah Aelterman, via a penalty, helping the hosts to their second lead of the evening. Cederick Van Daele put the game to bed in the 75th minute with the 4-2.

Bo van Essen and Quincy Veenhof helped GVVV to a confident first-round win over fellow amateurs VV Noordwijk, who were beaten 3-0 in Veenendaal. Van Essen scored twice in the opening 21 minutes, with the latter assisted by Veenhof, who put the final score on the board himself after 75 minutes.

RKAV Volendam became the pride of Volendam after beating Rohda Raalte 3-0, thus trumping big brother FC Volendam to reaching the second round. Roy Tol and Lex Veerman, cousin of Dortmund midfielder Joey Veerman, scored for the hosts in the first half, with Waleed Ait Abdellah scoring the third and final goal deep into injury time.
